The coral reefs in the Gulf of Mexico came into existence 5000-7000 years ago when the sea level rose following the ice age. There are more than 23,000 sq miles of coral and hard bottom reefs, one deep coral reef was discovered only a couple of years ago off the Florida Keys and it is the largest known expanse of deepwater coral reef in the world.

 

Only a few places in the world can lay claim to nature's rare Coastal Dune Lakes. New Zealand's Northland, Australia, Madagascar and Florida's Northwest Coast are home to these natural wonders.
